Japone Sushi – Newtown

So it has been a while since my last post, things had been a little busy over the past few months. I know, I originally promised a post from my trip to South Carolina,  that one is still coming. Until I get that post up I have a quick post from my last visit to Newtown.

Recently I met with a friend for lunch in Newtown and we decided on Japone. I had been to Japone before but did not have my camera with me. So I thought that this second visit would be a great opportunity to get some pictures of the food. The food at Japone Sushi is what I would consider Japanese Tex-Mex fusion. They used a lot of Mexican ideas and flavours; the Sushi Tacos are an example where the two flavours mix, other menu items have Jalapenos to spice them up. Their take on sushi is different that most other places, one item which I did not have, but witnessed delivered  to another table was the Sashimi platter. The platter has flashing led lights in the serving bowl lighting up the food from beneath.

I forgot to note the prices down, so you will have to deal with pictures only icon smile Japone Sushi Newtown

Spicy Salmon tacos with avocado  –

I was a little worried about having avocado with salmon, there was no need to be worriedThese were amazing, the cooling avocado was offset by the chilli mayo and really brought out the creaminess of salmon.

Popcorn prawns -

Small, bit size pieces of prawns, in crispy batter with a citrus glaze(probably yuzu, but I couldn’t be sure).

Spicy Edamame -

Chilli butter dressing on edamame.

Yaki Ika -

Grilled whole squid, covered in a sweet soy based sauce. Keeping the skin on the squid gave it a great initial crunch while still staying soft.

Golden Dragon Rolls -

These rolls are Japone’s pseudo speciality. Prawn, chicken, avocado, chilli mayo and salmon roe.

Asakusa

When I think of food in Newtown, Japanese food is not the first thing that springs to mind. Asakusa is on King Street just before you get the the Marly hotel. On the inside it had simple Japanese themed décor, the service was prompt and the food was great.

Spider Maki  - Soft shelled crab, deep-fried then rolled with avocado and cucumber. I never know how to eat the roll with the legs in it. I usually just go for one big bite. These ones, all were devoured in one bite.

Spice Tuna Rolls  -  These would have to be my favourite sushi of all. The Japanese mayo give these rolls some sweetness which is really well balanced by the sourness of the vinegar used in the sushi rice.

Goyza – Crisp on the outside,  moist and hot on the inside.

Mixed Tempura – I know how to get kids to eat their veggies. Just give them veggie tempura! I mean, it’s healthy right? These guys(carrots, beans, prawns and sweet potato)  had a crisp light batter coating with the underlying food still retaining most of their texture.

Sushi and Sashimi plate – Salmon, Tuna and Kingfish sushi and sashimi. Its hard to see but there were some Kingfish  sashimi on that plate.

Seaweed Salad – When we go out for sushi, seaweed salad is always ordered and always finished.

Edamame – No japanese meal would be complete without some edamame.

Asakusa was great for a quick bite to eat with friends. Nothing fancy, just good food for a reasonable price. With four people our bill came to around $60 with corkage.

I was in the mood for something different to eat so decided to check out mothers crepes in Parramatta.  Out the front of the store you can see the crepes being made. They have a very large range of different flavours, to make it easer to decide there is a display of  plastic models  of  all the crepes.
